Gonzales finally has a dining room that treats Caribbean and Creole cooking like everyday neighbors, not a once-a-year festival plate. Copa Cruzan Creole is open at 427 South Burnside Avenue, and the restaurant's Toast menu describes the concept as bold Caribbean Creole meeting South Louisiana roots.
Breakfast that runs deep
Mornings start early on the Toast card. Handhelds include a bacon turkey avocado egg sandwich ($14), breakfast poboy ($13), Burnside burrito ($10), fried chicken biscuit ($10) and cochon sandwich ($12). Omelettes climb from a build-your-own ($12) to coastal, Creole, garden and lechon versions priced in the mid-teens. Sweet plates bring rum cake French toast ($17), Cruzan plantain pancakes ($16) and a chocolate strawberry waffle ($17). Shrimp and grits, catfish breakfast and chicken and waffles all land at $18 when you want a full plate instead of a handheld.
Lunch, dinner and the bar
Daytime and evening plates include jerk chicken, coconut curry shrimp, lechon, Gulf shrimp and fried catfish, with steaks such as ribeye ($42), tenderloin ($40) and skirt steak ($34). Sandwiches run from a Cubano and jerk chicken sandwich to shrimp, catfish and oyster poboys. The bar pours a Copa Rum Punch ($15), $5 margaritas, frozen Copa Coladas and a long draft list that includes local-leaning names alongside standards. Desserts keep the island note with Nana's tres leche and rum cake for the table.
Toast currently shows weekly hours as closed, so confirm before you drive to Burnside. When the kitchen is firing, this is where Cruzan flavors meet Creole comfort in Gonzales.
