If you still associate downtown's riverfront museum with planetarium lasers and science carts, the upstairs gallery has another reason to climb the stairs this winter. Reflections: The Art of George Rodrigue remains on view at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum through Jan. 24, 2027, in the Upstairs Main Gallery.
What is on the walls
Organized by the George Rodrigue Life & Legacy Foundation, the show traces Rodrigue's path from early Cajun-themed paintings through the Blue Dog series that made him a household name. LASM and Visit Baton Rouge both highlight swamp-dog works, Hollywood portraits and pieces on metal and chrome alongside the classic blue canine. Rodrigue treated the Blue Dog as a mirror for whoever stood in front of it, and the museum leans into that idea with public programs and outreach around the hang.
Plan the visit
LASM sits at 100 South River Road, across from the Old State Capitol. Regular hours are Wednesday–Friday 10 a.m.–3 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 1–5 p.m. (closed Mondays and Tuesdays to the public). General admission is $16 for adults and $13 for children ages 3–12 and seniors 65+; members enter free. A ticket covers permanent exhibits, changing shows and unlimited Irene W. Pennington Planetarium screenings.
First Sundays bring free general admission, and Sensory Second Sundays (3–5 p.m.) dim the lights for visitors who need a quieter room. Call 225-344-5272 with questions.
Pair the Rodrigue galleries with a planetarium show and you have a full downtown afternoon before the holiday lights season really kicks in.
