Don't go looking for fancy light fixtures at Original New Orleans Poboy & Seafood. The money here goes into what lands on your tray. The family-owned spot on Florida Avenue in Denham Springs has stuck to that idea since 2003.

Quality over flash

The restaurant says it plainly: quality matters more than décor. Burgers are made to order, po'boys are packed full and sides are cooked fresh every day. Portions are big enough that plenty of customers split a burger or take leftovers home, and that's on purpose.

Over more than 20 years it has become a multi-generational habit. Kids who came in after Little League are now bringing their own children.

Pick your size

Po'boys come on a sandwich bun, an 8-inch or a 12-inch loaf. Shrimp, catfish, roast beef and hot sausage run $9.49, $11.49 and $15.49, while chicken, country fried steak, ham and turkey are a little less on the longer sizes. There's also a Philly cheese steak and a shrimp Philly.

The burgers go from a quarter-pound junior to a half-pound original to a full one-pound double, and any of them can be built as an 8- or 12-inch po'boy. A half-pound cheeseburger is $9.49, and a combo with fries and a drink adds $3.99.

Seafood and sides

Seafood platters of grilled or fried shrimp, catfish or a combination come with fries, salad and a roll, starting at $13.99. Chicken and sausage gumbo, red beans and rice and a muffaletta round out the specials. For sides, think curly Q's, fried okra, chili cheese fries and jalapeño poppers. Save room for soft serve cones at $2.49.

Find it at 526 Florida Ave. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, until 9 p.m. Friday and until 8 p.m. Sunday. There's a drive-thru, and you can call ahead at 225-667-3377. Bring an appetite, and maybe a to-go box.
