For many diners, Restaurant Week is all about scoring a great deal. For Baton Rouge food enthusiast Tony Ridinger, it's about something even better: discovery.

As one of the voices behind @eatthebootpod, Tony has spent years exploring local restaurants, but even he admits that Restaurant Week has introduced him to dishes he might never have ordered otherwise.

One of his most memorable Restaurant Week experiences happened at Doe's Eat Place.

"The first time I found out the pork chop at Doe's is ridiculous," Tony says. "I'd only ever gotten steak there. Restaurant Week was a good excuse to try something else, and now I anticipate that pork chop."

It's exactly the kind of story Restaurant Week hopes to create. Diners walk into a restaurant expecting one thing and leave with a new favorite dish, a new favorite chef, or even a new favorite restaurant.

While choosing a favorite Restaurant Week meal is nearly impossible for Tony, he says one thing stands out every year.

"Most places really try to show out for Restaurant Week."

Restaurants often use the event as an opportunity to showcase signature dishes, experiment with creative menu offerings, and introduce guests to what makes their establishment unique. The result is a dining experience that often feels elevated, special, and intentionally crafted.

Over the years, Tony has developed a Restaurant Week strategy that helps him make the most of the event.

His approach is simple:

Start with one or two reliable favorites. These are the restaurants you already know and love, the places that never disappoint.

Then add one or two restaurants you've been meaning to try. Restaurant Week provides the perfect opportunity to finally make that reservation you've been putting off.

Finally, choose one or two spots that fall outside your normal dining bubble.

"It's a great excuse to get out to St. Francisville, or Denham Springs, or Addis if those are normally 'too far,'" he says.

That mindset captures what Restaurant Week is really about. Beyond the menus and promotions, it's a celebration of exploration. It's a chance to support local restaurants, visit different communities, and experience the incredible variety that makes the Capital Region's food scene so special.

Whether you're a seasoned foodie with a game plan or someone looking for a reason to try somewhere new, Restaurant Week offers an invitation to step outside your routine.

You never know. Your next favorite meal might be waiting at a restaurant you've driven past a hundred times. Or it might be a pork chop you never planned to order.
