Reading the taco list at Zippy's is half the fun. There's the Pork-ins Overpass, a nod to the neighborhood. There's Love Shaq U, Shrimpin' Ain't Easy and the Bad Mother Clucker. Every one of them is $5.45, and you can build your own if none of the names call to you.
Zippy's Burritos, Tacos and More sits at 3155 Perkins Road, and its biggest selling point might be the clock. The kitchen serves from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, then stays open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Burritos, two ways
Burritos come in a regular for $14.95 or a large for $16.75. The Cuban packs pork, black beans, rice, queso, spicy slaw and chipotle ranch. The Cowboy goes with fajita steak, pinto beans, corn and guacamole, and the Funky Bean and Berkeley Stock cover the vegetarians. Then there's the Joey Burriteaux, loaded with steak, grilled onions, corn, guac, sour cream and salsa, with its larger size cheekily called the Heisman.
The newest corner of the menu is all buffalo chicken: crispy tenders tossed in buffalo sauce and turned into quesadillas, nachos, a chimichanga and a salad. Fajitas start at $22.95 for chicken, and the Big Zippy Dipper lets you pick three dips with chips for $15.95.
Feeding a crowd
Zippy's catering is to-go only and needs at least 24 hours' notice. A pack of 12 tacos runs $51.53, a dozen empanadas comes with 20 ounces of queso for $57.44, and the fajita pack feeds five to six for $101.95 with all the fixings.
Planning something bigger for the holidays? Zippy's also rents its room for parties with a taco or fajita bar setup. Room rentals have a 50-person minimum, and pricing is by phone at 225-388-9000. Sunday through Wednesday is generally open, while Thursday through Saturday depends on availability.
Late night or lunch break, the taco names alone are worth the stop.
