Welcome to “The House That Huey Built”

The Old Governor’s Mansion was constructed in 1930 during the administration of Governor Huey P. Long and eventually served as the residence of nine Louisiana governors. Today, it operates as a historic house museum where visitors can explore the building and learn more about the people, politics and stories connected to it.

The mansion is primarily Georgian in design, with French and Louisiana influences incorporated throughout. Look closely and you’ll find details like a French mansard roof, American marble, hand-printed French wallpaper and crystal chandeliers believed to have come from France.

Basically, there is a LOT more hiding behind those doors than you might expect.

Wait Until You See Inside

One of the best parts of visiting is simply getting to wander through the mansion and take in the details.

There’s a grand ballroom, hidden staircase, water-cooled solarium, Rose Garden and even a replica of the Oval Office to discover along the way.

Beyond the architecture, the rooms offer a glimpse into an era when this wasn't a museum at all. It was a working governor's residence where Louisiana leaders and their families actually lived.

Jimmie Davis, known for popularizing “You Are My Sunshine,” was the final governor to call the mansion home before Louisiana transitioned to a new Governor’s Mansion.

Yes, You Can Just Walk In

This might be the part that surprises Baton Rouge locals the most.

You don't need a special invitation to see inside. Walk-ins are welcome for free self-guided tours. Maps and information for a virtual tour are available when you arrive, so you can explore the mansion at your own pace. Guided tours are also available for groups and field trips by request.

It makes the Old Governor’s Mansion an easy addition to a Downtown Baton Rouge day, especially if you're looking for something different to do without spending anything.
