New Orleans artist Megan Milani is coming home, and she’s bringing with her a colorful collection of work inspired by the world as she sees it.

812 Royal Gallery will welcome Milani for the opening reception of Layered – The Work of Megan Milani on Friday, September 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition offers visitors a chance to experience Milani’s intricate mixed-media works and explore the moments, places, and observations that inspire them.

Raised in the Crescent City and now living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Milani has developed an artistic style that feels as free-forming and unexpected as the subjects that capture her attention. Her compositions combine watercolor, ink, and gauze on cotton paper, creating richly layered works filled with winding lines, vibrant colors, delicate details, and constantly changing textures.

What makes Milani’s story particularly interesting is the balance between her creative work and her professional life. Outside of her art, she works as a biomedical engineer. The intricacy found throughout her paintings reflects some of the same complexity present in her scientific work, demonstrating how seemingly different parts of a person’s life can influence one another.

Milani’s creative process begins with observation.
