Midweek Plans Just Got Artsy
Mark your calendar because First Wednesday at Baton Rouge Gallery is back and March is bringing a triple feature.
On Wednesday, March 4 from 6 to 9 pm, the gallery will host its First Wednesday Opening Reception featuring the work of BRG Artist Members Jacqueline Dee Parker, Eleanor Owen Kerr, and Herb Roe. If you have never been to a First Wednesday in City Park, this is your sign. It is free, it is welcoming, and it is one of the easiest ways to plug into Baton Rouge’s creative energy.
Located at 1515 Dalrymple Drive inside City Park, Baton Rouge Gallery has been connecting audiences with contemporary artists for decades. Their mission is simple but powerful: to connect audiences with local and national contemporary artists through exhibitions and innovative cultural programming. And they have been doing exactly that for more than 55 years.
The gallery’s roots stretch back to 1965, when it began as Unit 8 Gallery, a private artist cooperative founded by eight local artists. Just a year later, the group incorporated as a nonprofit and officially became Baton Rouge Gallery. Since then, it has grown into one of the longest standing artist cooperative organizations in the United States. That means the artists themselves help shape the direction of the gallery, keeping it dynamic, collaborative, and deeply connected to the community.
Over the years, the walls of BRG have showcased some of the most admired visual artists in Baton Rouge and beyond. From painters and photographers to sculptors, printmakers, ceramicists, and installation artists, you never quite know what you will encounter in a given exhibition. That is part of the fun.
In 1984, BRG partnered with BREC and relocated to its current home in City Park, where it continues to operate in a historic building originally constructed in 1927. Today, the gallery presents new contemporary art exhibitions each month, with opening receptions always held on the first Wednesday. It is a rhythm the community has come to love.
The March 4 reception celebrating Parker, Kerr, and Roe promises an evening filled with fresh perspectives, conversation, and that buzz you only get when artists and audiences gather in the same space. Whether you are a longtime art lover or just looking for a midweek plan that feels a little more inspiring than your usual routine, First Wednesday is an easy yes.
So grab a friend, stroll through City Park, and step inside. Baton Rouge Gallery continues to prove that great art belongs right here in our city and that everyone is invited to experience it.
