Some LSU football traditions start in Tiger Stadium. Others start around the dinner table.

Ruffino’s Baton Rouge welcomed football season back Sunday night with its annual “Eat the Competition” Dinner, bringing Tiger fans together for an evening of food, wine and a little friendly SEC rivalry before LSU’s 2026 season gets underway.

The August 30 dinner drew a great crowd of guests dressed in their LSU best and ready to celebrate one of Ruffino’s most creative annual traditions.

And this isn’t just another football-themed dinner.

A Menu Built Around LSU’s Competition

Each year, Chef Patrick puts together a multi-course menu inspired by teams LSU will face during the upcoming season. The idea is pretty simple: if the Tigers have to play them, Ruffino’s is going to find a way to put them on the menu.

This year’s “tailgate meal” took guests through some of LSU’s 2026 competition course by course.

The evening started with Nashville Hot Chicken Bites before moving into dishes inspired by Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Alabama.

Guests were served Hotty Toddy Pho with braised chicken, herbs and jalapeños; Crimson Crudo featuring yellowfin tuna; a Stuffed Gamecock with dirty rice-stuffed quail, sweet potato purée and raspberry Szechuan glaze; and Longhorn Ribeye with dry-aged beef, smoked tallow butter, Alabama mash and asparagus.

Even the wine pairings followed along with each course.

And because an LSU victory deserves something sweet, the meal finished with Mississippi Mud Pie featuring gooey brownie, chocolate custard and whipped cream.

It was playful, a little competitive and exactly the kind of menu you would expect from a restaurant getting ready for another season of Tiger football.

Football Season, the Ruffino’s Way

The dinner has become an annual tradition at Ruffino’s, offering fans a different way to celebrate the beginning of football season before weekends become consumed by tailgates, watch parties and trips to Death Valley.

Instead of firing up the grill in a parking lot, guests gathered around the table for a more elevated take on the traditional preseason tailgate.

Great food, wine, LSU colors and plenty of anticipation for the season ahead filled the restaurant Sunday evening.

The turnout showed just how ready Baton Rouge is for football to be back.

More Than Dinner

Ruffino’s also used the evening to bring attention to an important cause, adding a charitable component to a night already centered around bringing the community together.

That combination of food, football and giving back has helped make Eat the Competition more than a clever themed menu. It’s become a kickoff tradition of its own.

And after Sunday night, consider Baton Rouge officially ready for Tiger football. The jerseys are coming out. The tailgate plans are being made. The purple and gold are everywhere again. Now there’s only one thing left to do.
