Headed up to Clinton? Plan a stop on Liberty Street. Liberty House Specialties, at 11652 Liberty Street, runs two shops in one: a coffee and breakfast cafe in the morning and a scoop shop in the evening.
The building has its own story. According to the shop, Liberty House dates to around 1868 and held the first general store in the Feliciana parishes. Today it's a place to grab a latte on the way to work or a cone after supper.
Mornings: coffee, bagels and big cinnamon rolls
The coffee menu covers drip, iced coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and frappes, with a long list of flavors that runs from butter pecan and toffee nut to lavender and wedding cake. Iced coffee can be made with condensed milk, and there's a stroopwafel you can rest on top of a hot cup. Hot chocolate joins the lineup from October through March, including a cinnamon-spiced Mexican version.
Bagels rotate weekly, from everything and jalapeño to pumpernickel and marble rye, with spreads like honey pecan and onion chive and add-ons including lox and deer sausage. Cinnamon rolls come regular or gluten-free in flavors like caramel apple, maple bacon overload and butter pecan. Buttermilk biscuits, scones, egg bites and a smoothie and bowl menu with acai, pitaya and jackfruit round it out.
Evenings: nearly 30 flavors
After the coffee crowd clears, the freezer case takes over. Liberty House scoops close to 30 super-premium ice cream flavors that rotate with the seasons, think Blackberry Lemon Bar, Butter Pecan and Espresso Almond Fudge, served in cones from waffle to pretzel or blended into milkshakes.

Morning hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 7 to 11 a.m. Evening hours are Thursday and Friday, 3 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The shop is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Call-in orders go to (225) 683-9342, and gift cards are available.
