Needlepoint has a new home base in Baton Rouge. The Red Stitch, which calls itself the city's newest LNS (local needlepoint shop, in stitcher speak), sells hand-painted canvases, threads and finishing supplies from a storefront at 7517 Jefferson Highway, and it's set up to be a place to sit and stitch as much as a place to shop.

Shop, stitch, stay

The shop stocks canvases in 13 and 18 mesh, beginner favorites, key fobs and wearable designs, along with silk, wool and metallic fibers and accessories such as project bags, trays, needleminders, stretcher bars and scissors. If you want threads matched to a canvas, note it on your order and the shop will invoice you for the kitting.

Open stitching needs no reservation. Bring a work in progress, get help picking fibers or just spend time around the table. Mahjong is part of the mix too.

Holiday projects

The holiday canvas collection includes ornaments such as a $42 Santa Moon and a $56 poinsettia, plus nutcrackers and Santa scenes. Needlepoint stockings run $265 to $410. For kids, the Little Stitch Krewe kits start at $39, and Blue Poppy kits with Louisiana motifs like an alligator, a blue crab and a fleur-de-lis are $50.
